He was appointed as a Midshipman RN 1719. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN in 1723. He was appointed as a Captain RN in 1727. He was appointed as a Rear Admiral RN in 1745. He spent most of his career in North American or West Indian waters after 1718. He commanded the force which supported the New England troops who captured Louisbourg in 1745. He was the first British Governor of Cape Breton Island 1745. He was second-in-command in 1747 when Taffanel de la Jonquiere's expedition to retake Louisbourg was defeated by Admiral Anson. |
