Military Service
He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RN in 1827. He was appointed as a Sub-lieutenant RN in 1834. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 28/04/1838). He served in H.M.S. Castor in 1840. He was a Lieutenant of H.M.S. Castor at the taking of Caiffa and Tsour on coast of Syria and at the bombardment of St. Jean d'Acre. He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 16/04/1842). He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 02/12/1844). He served in H.M.S. Cornwallis (In command) 1855. He commanded a detached squadron at the bombardment of Sveaborg in 1855. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 03/04/1863). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 26/07/1869). He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief North America and West Indies Station (Flag in H.M.S. Royal Alfred) 1869. He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief North America and West Indies Station (Flag in H.M.S. Bellerophon) 1873. He was appointed as a Admiral (With seniority dated 11/12/1875). He was the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Navy. He served as the Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty 1877-79. (He received a Good Service Pension in 1879 and he was retired on 02/08/1879.)
