He was a labourer at the time of his recruitment into the navy.

He appointed as an Ordinary Seaman RNCVR. He had First World War service. In 1917 he served in HMS Vivid. (He was demobilized).

He died from cerebro spinal meningitis at the Royal Naval Hospital East Stonehouse 3 Jun 1917. He is buried at Ford Park Cemetery Grave Ref: CS 11 5.
