Military Service
He entered the Royal Navy at the age of 10. He was appointed as a Volunteer RN (With seniority dated 01/03/1793). He was appointed as a Midshipman RN c1782. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 20/02/1797). He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 21/06/1805). He served in H.M.S. Loire as First Lieutenant 1805. He served in H.M.S. Confiance (In command) 1805. (He captured the 22 gun privateer frigate Confiance in 1805.) He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 19/12/1807). He served in H.M.S. Southampton (In command) 1811. He was appointed as a Commodore RN (With seniority dated 19/03/1813). He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief Great Lakes, Lake Champlain and St. Lawrence River in May 1813. He was in several engagements with American warships and was in charge of an ambitious building programme that produced H.M.S. St. Lawrence (112 guns) at Kingston - then larger than H.M.S. Victory and the most powerful warship produced up to that time in Canada. He was present at Battle of Trafalgar and served in several Small Boat Actions. He returned to UK 1815. He served as Commander-in-Chief West Coast of Africa (For anti-slavery patrols) (Pendant carried in H.M.S. Inconstant). He died at sea in H.M.S. Semiramus 1817 on a voyage from Africa. He was buried at the Royal Garrison Chapel Portsmouth.
