He was the second son of Sir David Baird Bt. and the grandson of the 1st Marquess of Ailsa.
Military Service

He served in H.M.S. Duke of Wellington in 1855. He was present for the Russian Campaign in the Baltic in 1855. He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 03/07/1857). He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 16/02/1864). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 31/12/1879). He was appointed as AdC to HM Queen Victoria in 1878. He was appointed as Commander-in-Chief of HM Ships and Vessels on the Pacific Station (Flag in H.M.S. Swiftsure) 1884-85. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 18/01/1886). He was appointed as Admiral Superintendent of Naval Reserves in 1885-88. He was the Senior Officer-in-Command of the Channel Squadron 1888-90. (He was retired on 16/09/1897.)
