He was living in Edmonton AB at the time of his recruitment into the navy.

He was appointed as an Officer Cadet RCN 1949. He served in Royal Roads Military College (HMCS Malahat) under UNTD Plan 1949-1951. He was appointed as a Midshipman RCN (With seniority dated 11/09/1950). He served in HMCS Ontario for Sea Training 1950. He served in HMCS Beacon Hill for Sea Training 1950.
