Military Service
He was appointed as an Officer Cadet (NR) 1977. In 1977 he served in HMCS Carleton for training while attending Carleton University. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieurtenant (NR) (MARS) (With seniority dated 14/06/1982). In 1981 he served in HMCS Porte Dauphine as Navigating Officer. In 1981 he served in Venture The Naval Officer Training Centre for MARS IV training. (Transferred to Regular Force 1982) In 1982 he served in Canadian Forces Fleet School Halifax for Naval Operation Course. In 1982 he served in HMCS Huron for training. In 1983 he served in HMCS Huron as Navigating Officer. He was appointed as a Lieutenant (MARS) (With seniority dated 1/01/1984). In 1984 he served in HMCS Cowichan as Navigating Officer. In 1985 he served in HMCS Thunder as Navigating Officer. In 1985 he served in HMCS Qu'Appelle as Navigating Officer. In 1987 he served in Venture The Naval Officer Training Centre as Training Coordination Officer. In 1987 he served in Canadian Forces Fleet School Halifax for Combat Control Officers Course. In 1988 he served in HMCS Athabaskan as Weapons Officer and later Combat Officer. He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander (MARS) (With seniority dated 1/01/1990). In 1990 he served at Dalhousie University for post graduate studies. In 1992 he served in MARCOM HQ as Senior Staff Officer Policy Coordination. In 1994 he served in Canadian Forces Command and Staff College. In 1995 he served in HMCS Regina as Executive Officer 1995. He was appointed as a Commander (With seniority dated 1/01/1996). He was appointed as a Commander (MARS) (With seniority dated 1/01/1996). In 1996 he served in HMCS Protecteur as Executive Officer. In 1997 he served in HMCS Vancouver (in command). In 1999 he served as Commander Sea Training Pacific. He was appointed as a Captain (N) (With seniority dated 1/01/2000). In 2000 he served in NDHQ ADM (Policy) as Director Asia-Pacific Policy and Special Assistant to Director-General International Security Policy. In 2002 he served in HMCS Athabaskan (in command). In 2005 he served in Canadian Forces Command and Staff College for National Security Studies Programme. He was appointed as a Commodore (CF) (With seniority dated ). In 2005 he was appointed as Commander Canadian Fleet Pacific. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral (CF) (With seniority dated 8/06/2007). He served in NDHQ as Director of Staff-Strategic Joint Staff 2007. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral (CF) (With seniority dated 27/04/2009). He served in MARCOM as Director of Staff-Strategic Joint Staff, and command of the Canadian Pacific Fleet. He served in NDHQ as Commander of Canada Command 2009. He served in NDHQ as Vice Chief of the Defence Staff 2010. (He retired in 01/09/2013).
