He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 04/12/1753). He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 14/02/1759). He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 13/03/1761). He was appointed as a Commodore RN 1783. He served as Commander-in-Chief in the River St. Lawrence along the coast of Nova Scotia the islands of St. John and Cape Breton and in the Bay of Fundy (Pendant in H.M.S. Assistance and H.M.S. Hermione) 1783-6. He was appointed as a Rear Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 24/09/1787). He was noted for inventing improvements in naval gunnery. He relieved the forces in Quebec in 1776.
