He was the DL for Aberdeenshire in 1878.

He was promoted for action against pirates at Sarebas Borneo in 1849. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 27/10/1849). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 02/04/1866). He was appointed as Commander-in-Chief HM Ships and Vessels on the Pacific Station (Flag in H.M.S. Zealous) 1869. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 06/04/1873). He was appointed as a Admiral RN (With seniority dated 09/03/1878). He served as Commander-in-Chief Devonport 1878-80. He was awarded a Good Service Pension 1864. (He was retired on 09/01/1840.)
