Biography
Originally his name was Benjamin Hallowell, but he changed his family name to Carew in 1828.
 
Military Service
He was appointed a a A/Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 31/08/1781). He served in H.M.S. Alcide 1781. He served in H.M.S. Alfred. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 25/04/1783). He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 22/11/1790). He served in H.M.S. Scorpion (Sloop) (In command) 1790. He served in H.M.S. Camel (Storeship) (In command) 1793. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 30/08/1793). He served in H.M.S. Robust (In temporary command). He served in HMS Lowestoft (In command) 1794. He served in H.M.S. Courageux (In command) 1794. He served in H.M.S. Lively (In command) 1797. He served in H.M.S. Swiftsure (In command) 1797 and present at the Battle of the Nile. He was present at the Battle of Aboukir Bay. (He was captured by the French in 1801, released on parole and court-martialled at Port Mahon but acquitted of all blame.) He was appointed as a Commodore RN 1802. He served in H.M.S. Argo (In command) 1802. He served in H.M.S. Tigre (In command) 1803. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 01/08/1811). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the White RN 12/08/1812). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Red RN (With seniority dated 04/06/1814). He served as Commander-in-Chief Coast of Ireland 1816-18). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 12/08/1819). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the White (With seniority dated 19/07/1821). He was appointed as a Commander-in-Chief The Nore (Flag in H.M.S. Prince Regent) 1821-24.
