He was the son of Lieutenant Arther Harwood RCN.
 
Military Service
He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) 1951. In 1951 he served in HMCS Malahat for UNTD. He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RCN 1952. He served in Royal Roads Military College 1952. He was appointed as a Midshipman RCN (With seniority dated 01/09/1953). He served in HMCS Ontario for Sea Training, Lauzon for Sea Training. He served in HMCS Magnificent for Sea Training. He was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant RCN (With seniority dated 01/01/1955). He served in HMCS Niobe for General Education and Warfare Course Royal Naval College Greenwich 1955. He served in the RN Barracks Portsmouth for Sub-Lieutenants Courses 1955. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RCN 1956. He served in HMCS Fraser as Gunnery Officer 1957. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RCN (With seniority dated 16/01/1957). He served in HMCS Fraser for Cadet Training Duties 1958. He served in HMCS Ste Therese as Cadet Training Officer 1959.
