In 1868 he served in HMS Rodney (in command) on the China Station. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 07/07/1884). He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief HM Ships and Vessels on the Pacific Station (Flag carried in H.M.S. Triumph) 1887. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN (With seniority dated 29/11/1889). He was appointed as Commander-in-Chief HM Ships and Vessels on the Pacific Station (Flag in H.M.S. Swiftsure). He was appointed as Commander-in-Chief The Nore 1892.
