Biography
He was created as a Peer of Great Britain in 1782 as Viscount and then again in 1788 as Earl Howe. He was responsible for the introduction of improved methds of signalling at sea adopting systems developed by Richard Kempenfelt and others.
 
Military Service
He entered the Royal Navy in 16/07/1739 and served in H.M.S. Pearl in 1739 and H.M.S. Severn in 1740. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN in 1744. He was appointed as a Commander RN in 1745. He served in H.M.S. Baltimore (In command) 1745. He was appointed as a Captain RN (With seniority dated 10/04/1746) (aged 20). He served in H.M.S. Magnanime (In command) 1758. He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the Blue RN on 18/10/1770). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral of the White RN (With seniority dated 31/03/1775). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Blue RN (With seniority dated 05/02/1776). He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral of the Red RN 1778. He was appointed as the First Lord of the Admiralty serving 1783-88. He was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of H.M. Ships and Vessels in North America (Flag in H.M.S. Eagle) on 24/09/1787. He was appointed as a Admiral of the Fleet RN (With seniority dated 12/03/1796). He was appointed as a General of the Royal Marines.
