He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RN 1879. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RN. He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN. He served in the Anglo-Egyptian War 1882. He served in the Boer War 1899. He was appointed as a Commander RN. He was appointed as a Captain RN. He was appointed as a Commodore RN. In 1905 he was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief for Station Duties on the West Coast of America (Pendant carried in in H.M.S. Shearwater 1904-06). He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN. He commanded a Light Cruiser Squadron in the First World War. He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN 1922. (He was released.)
