In 1938 he served as a Deckhand (under Captain George MacFarlane) and then Mate on the Solander (under Captain Walter Larsen) towing logs out of Nitinat Lake BC. He was qualified as a Master Mariner. While serving in the Solander he participated in the salvage of the engine from the Varsity that eventually went into the Nitinat Chief. He served in the Nitinat Chief as Engineer. With his brother Dan he purchased the Solander and towed for J.H. Todd Fisheries 1944-1952. |
