Biography
He was the father of Sandy McCandless and the brother of George Bartlett McCandless and John Gilmore McCandless. He served in the Canadian Pacific Line Coast Services prior to the Second World War.

 

Military Service

He was appointed as a Probationary Paymaster Sub-Lieutenant RCNR (With seniority dated 07/07/1938). He was appointed as a Paymaster Lieutenant RCNR (With seniority dated 01/09/1939). (Mobilized for World War Two service). He served On Staff of Commanding Officer Pacific Coast for Duty with Extended Defence Staff 1939. He was appointed as an A/Paymaster Lieutenant-Commander (Temp.) RCNR. He served in the RCN Barracks Esquimalt as Accountant Officer 1941. He was appointed as an A/Paymaster Commander (Temp.) RCNR (WHA). He served in NSHQ as Director of Account Personnel 1943. In 1943 he served in HMCS Uganda as Supply Officer. (Transferred to RCN 05/1944). He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander (S) RCN (With seniority dated 01/07/1945). He was appointed as an A/Commander (S) RCN 1944. In 1944-1945 he served in HMCS Uganda as Supply Officer. He served in HMCS Stadacona for RCN Barracks Halifax as Supply Officer. He served in HMCS Stadacona as Command Supply Officer. He was appointed as a Commander (S) RCN (With seniority dated 01/07/1948). He served in NHQ as Director of Naval Pay Accounting 1948. He was appointed as a A/Captain (S) RCN. He served in NHQ as Naval Secretary and Secretary to the Naval Board 1950. He was appointed as a Captain (S) RCN (With seniority dated 01/07/1953). He served in NHQ as Deputy Supply Officer-in-Chief 1956. He served in the National Defence College of Canada (Course 14) 1960. He was appointed as a Commodore RCN (With seniority dated 01/09/1962). He served in NHQ as Deputy Supply Officer-in-Chief and Deputy Naval Comptroller 1962. (He resigned in 1966.)
