He was appointed as a Cadet RNR. In 1937-39 he attended HMS Conway (Merchant navy training establishment). He was appointed as a Cadet in the British Merchant Service 1939-41, (Transferred to RCNR) 1941. He was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RCNR 1941. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant (Temp.) RCNR (With seniority dated 30/01/1942). He served in HMCS Moose Jaw 1942. He was appointed as a Lieutenant (Temp.) RCNR (With seniority dated 30/07/1942). He served in HMCS Cornwallis for Long Gunnery Course 1943. He was appointed as a Lieutenant (g) (Temp.) RCNR 1943. He served in HMCS Cornwallis for Duty at HMC Gunnery School. (Transferred to RCN 1944). He was appointed as a Lieutenant RCN (With seniority dated 30/07/1942). He served in HMCS Quinte (In command) 1944. He served in HMCS Haida 1944. He served in HMCS Scotian on Staff of Officer Commanding Harbour Craft HMC Dockyard Halifax and as Master Intendent 1945. He served in HMCS Haida as First Lieutenant 1946.
