He was the son of a French officer and a First Nations woman. He took the name of his father's native city. |

He became a soldier in Canada. In 1660 he went to the West Indies to become a buccaneer. In 1670 he joined Sir Henry Morgan in the expedition against Panama. After becoming rich he settled in the Tortuga Islands. In 1677 he was the Deputy Lieutenant of the King of France. |
