He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 15/10/1926). He served in H.M.S. Renown 1929. He served in H.M.S. Excellent for Long Gunnery Course 1930. He served in H.M.S. Vivid 1931. He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander RN (With seniority dated 15/10/1934). He served in H.M.S. Excellent 1934. He served in H.M.S. Kempenfeldt as Flotilla Gunnery Officer in Second RN Destroyer Flotilla 1935. He served in H.M.S. York 1939. He served in H.M.S. Southampton 1940. He served in H.M.S. Illustrious 1941.
