He was appointed as a Cadet at the Royal Military College. He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RCN (CN Special Entry No. 34) 1933. He served with the Royal Navy for training. He was appointed as a Midshipman (E) RCN (With seniority dated 01/09/1934). He served in RN for Training. He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant (E) RCN. In 1934 he served in the Royal Naval Engineering College Devonport for Training. He was appointed as a Lieutenant (E) RCN (With seniority dated 01/12/1938). He served in the RCN Barracks Halifax as Engineering Instructor 1941. He served in HMCS Restigouche as Engineer Officer 1942. He served in HMCS Avalon as Flotilla Engineer Officer 1943. He served on the RN Staff Course 1945. He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander (E) RCN (With seniority dated 01/09/1945). He served in HMCS Magnificent as Senior Engineer 1945. He served in NHQ on Technical Staff 1948. He was appointed as a Commander (E) RCN (With seniority dated 01/01/1949). He served in NHQ as Staff Officer (Diesel Engineering) 1949. He served in HMCS Ontario as Engineer Officer 1951. He served in HMCS Naden as Assistant Command Technical Officer Pacific Command 1952.
