Anecdotes
In 1979 this vessel was built at Victoria BC for service betwen Langdale, Keats and Gambier Islands. Her capacity was 38 foot passengers. Captain Robert Bennie reports that "this vessel was build in 1979 by Canoe Cove Manufacturing and was based on their Canoe Cove 41 design. this vessel was 42' LOA (12.8 meters) with a beam of 13'2" (3.8 meters) and draft of 3'4" (1 meter). As you have said in your description the Gross tonnage was 20.57 tons and registered tonnage was 13.99. this vessel was build of fiberglass. this vessel was initially powered by two 215 Hp 653 series Detroit Diesel engines attached to Borg Warner Vee drives. All that weight in the stern, while good for space utilization for passengers and luggage, made her squat badly and this vesselnever really reached her designed speed until this vessel was re-engined running at a service speed of about 16 knots. This vessel carried 38 passengers with a crew of two - Launch Operator and deckhand. this vessel was re-engined with 6 cylinder Volvo Penta turbo diesels of about 250 hp each in 1985. The Vee drive set up was changed completely and the engines were moved into the main cabin area and the aft cargo compartment was converted into passenger seating. The engines were coupled to Twin disc reduction gears on straight drives instead of vee drives. this made her ride more level and gave her a service speed of 20 knots loaded. Don Black and I sailed her back from Canoe Cove to Langdale. Other Launch Operators on this vessel included John McPhedran and Dan Cross plus myself. I worked on her from 1979 until the route was privatized in 2003. "
