Anecdotes
On July 09, 1911 this freighter owned by Thomas G. McBride, Vancouver BC was loaded with Lime from Texada Island south bound for Seattle WA USA. When this vesselarrived at Dodd Narrows, Captain Norman McLeod was forced to wait for the change of tide. Shortly after this vesselstopped in False Narrows a fire was discovered in the forward hold with no way to control it. Water had come in contact with the lime and heat of the reaction caused the fire. The crew put the wheel over and this vessel was sailing in ever decreasing circles chased by the tug Bermuda with the crew huddled at the bow trying to escape the flames. The engineers had been driven out of the engine room before the engines could be stopped and this vessel was travelling at a high speed. this vessel was run ashore while the crew retreated astern. Quickly the fire enveloped the vessel and crew had to be rescued by the tug Bermuda. this vessel was a total loss.
