Robert Lawson (British Columbia Nautical History Facebook Group 27/07/2017) states that "The story of her building is interesting. Hartley Holmes was the chief surveyor for the British Columbia coast in the 1920s and in one expedition near the Qeen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwai) nearly lost his life in a great storm while out in one of the government boats. He refused to go out again unless he was provided with a boat designed to his specifications and built under his supervision. The government was forced to aquiese as he was the only person left who knew exactly where all the old Admiralty survey marks from the Egeria surveys of the 1860's onwards were located. He contracted Halliday to design the boat and hired Toshuro Uneida in Victoria to build her. this vessel was planked with full length Port Orford cedar, all copper fastened. this vessel was a gaff yawl originally being converted to Marconi rig in the early 1950's. Until Mr Hill owned her this vessel was beautifuuly kept with a cream hull, varnished woodwork, and polished brass." Don Reksten (Curatorial Committee Royal Victoria Yacht Club 15/02/2016) reports that "During the Second World War this vesselparticipated in the RCN Motor Boat Squadron, a project involving owner training and participation in drills. The only compensation was dispensation from gas rationing."
