Anecdotes
Jamie Webb (British Columbia Nautical History Facebook Group 15/07/2018) states that "I bought Merriwake around 1990 from Brian Williams - a retired navy Stoker Petty Officer - who had owned it for several decades. My wife and I rebuilt her in our driveway with the help of John Tennier who apprenticed with Peter London in Sidney BC Canada. At least half of the planks and frames were replaced along with the forward trunk cabin. We also removed a plywood extension aft of the wheelhouse and replaced it with some thing more sympathetic. I had all the paperwork from when B.C. Packers purchased the boat at auction during the war (this went to the next owner). For many years Merriwake was owned by Randall Matthews proprietor or Randall's Landing - predecessor to Westport Marine in Sidney. Randall delivered small freight and sometimes towed a little barge. The boat originally had an Easthope and was later re-powered with a 1947 Vivian three cylinder gas engine. Tor Miller of Oak Bay BC helped install the engine. Bill Garden had the identical engine in his launch Merlin. I sold the boat around 1997 to concentrate on building a house on Ruxton Island and needed something a little quicker than 5-6 knots! New owner Bob Farrell promptly removed the old Vivian and removed the afterhouse. He put in a small diesel. He didn't own it long and then it went to Saturna for a while. I saw it there with a big curtain and canopy over the cockpit a la African Queen. Some time after that I heard it had been road moved to the interior. I have many photos of our rebuild and a few that Randall Matthews' family gave me at the Classic Boat festival in Victoria BC."
