Anecdotes
Shirley Cawley (nee Gooldrup) states "Gilbert Norman Gooldrup who was my father and the boats he built. Gilbert first put a rounded stern on his first fishboat the Spark Plug (originally a square ended vessel) which started his trend of building speed hulls which he fished. Unlike his brothers, Gilbert was first and foremost a fisherman and built all his own boats. A boating accident in which the Spark Plug sank 1957 in Whale Channel led to the first building of his own first boat, the Spark Plug ll which launched in 1958. Gilbert Gooldrup built his vessels from high grade marine plywood scarfed together with glue and nails for lightweight and speed. He would take advantage of this speed and deliver his catch from mid-coast directly to Vancouver markets to take advantage of better pricing."
