On November 28, 1965 this tug owned by Mogens Johnstad-Moeller, North Vancouver BC capsized while towing a barge and sank at Second Narrows, Burrard Inlet BC. Caught in a rip current half a mile from Second Narrows this vesselcapsized while towing a barge this vesseldeveloped engine trouble. Radioing for help the tug Service two arrived to assist by pushing on the barge. Suddenly the barge started to veer off-course, so the Service II backed off when the Tornado capsized and sank. Captain John Stad was trapped in an air lock in the engine room. He managed to break a window and swim to the surface. Crew member John A. Boyle perished in the incident. The tug was later salvaged and repaired at McKenzie Shipyards. |
