Named Features
Significance of Name Bagheera is a fictional character in Rudyard Kipling's Mowgli stories in The Jungle Book (coll. 1894) and The Second Jungle Book (coll. 1895). He is a black panther (melanistic Indian leopard) who serves as friend, protector and mentor to the "man-cub" Mowgli. The word bagheera is Hindi for panther or leopard, although the root word bagh means any form of panthera and is nowadays mostly used to refer to the Royal Bengal tiger.

Anecdotes
Andy Copeland (Email to Nauticapedia 18/12/2024) stated "In 1984, having sold his business partnership, he and Liza ordered their ultimate ‘Bagheera’, a 40’ Beneteau in which they set sail from France in 1985 with their sons Duncan (then 8), Co’in (then 6) and Jamie (then 2). Over the next six years they circumnavigated, visiting 52 countries and educating the kids on board except for the year they spent in Australia. On return to work in Vancouver in 1991 ‘Bagheera’ was moored at Royal Vancouver YC, just a few minutes from home and was cruised extensively around the vast British Columbia coast. In 1998 they sailed south on a voyage of exploration of the North and Central Americas, ending up a year later in Nova Scotia. Another year of cruising the North American east coast and Bagheera was again heading across the Atlantic to further explore Europe, the Middle East, north and West Africa, South America and the Caribbean. It wasn’t until 2007 that ‘Bagheera’ returned to Vancouver, having sailed 123,000 nautical miles (about 228,000 kilometers) and visited 114 different countries and colonies. Andy and Liza cruised Canada’s west coast and Alaska and the San Juan Islands until 2017, when they decided that it was time to finally retire from the sailing life. Bagheera is now owned by Jamie, their youngest son, and his wife Cathy and their kids Will and Belle.
