Anecdotes
In 1940 this vessel was appraised at $25,000 and chartered for $419 per month by the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1941 this vessel was loaned to the Royal Canadian Air Force, manned by RCN Fishermen's Reserve crews as B.C. Lady (H.M.C.S.). In 1941 this vessel was returned to the RCN as a Canadian Naval Patrol Vessel, Fishermen's Reserve based at Prince Rupert BC. In 1942 this vessel was serving as tender to H.M.C.S. Givenchy. In 1943 this vessel was serving as tender to H.M.C.S. Chatham. In 1944 this vessel was serving as tender to H.M.C.S. Givenchy. On April 18, 1976 this vessel had an engine room fire and burned on the south side of the Malaspina Peninsula at Ragged Island BC. The Judge Advocate-General stated “B.C. Lady, Combat and Snow Prince. These three vessels were requisitioned by the Director of Marine Services and do not form part of the Fishermen’s Reserve in that they were not part of the Fishermen’s Reserve prior to the outbreak of the War. It may be that these vessels are being manned by personnel who belong to the Fishermen’s Reserve, but this does not mean that the vessels themselves belong to the Fishermen’s Reserve… …The mere fact that these vessels are not considered to be part of the Fishermen’s Reserve for the purposes of payment of Charter hire, etc., will still permit you to treat them as being Fishermen’s Reserve vessels, if you so desire.”
