Anecdotes
This vessel was reported to have been a rum runner operating out of British Honduras. On Saturday evening, May 24, 1952 the fishpacker Kanawaka was rammed by the passenger vessel Capilano 4 miles east southeast of Gower Point BC. The fishing vessel was three hours out of Vancouver bound for Prince Rupert. The crew had difficulty freeing the lifeboat, by the time they had succeeded the wheelhouse was filling with water. A heavy swell capsized the boat just as they launched it putting them all in the water. The Capilano put a lifeboat in the water, the crew of six who were in the water for twenty minutes before rescue. The impact of the collision left a large hole in the stern of the vessel filling her hold with water.
