He was appointed as a Flight Sub-Lieutenant RNAS (With seniority dated 19/10/1917) in Ottawa ON 19/04/1917. He served in #12 (N) Squadron 01/12/1917. He served in #4 (Naval) Squadron. He served in HMS Furious 20/10/1918. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross "In the absence of his flight commander, Lieutenant Barnum has since the 28th September acted as leader in eleven successful low bombing raids. In these he has shown marked courage and devotion to duty, descending at times to 50 feet altitude. In addition, this officer has destroyed four enemy machines." |
