This vessel was built by Western Pipe and Steel Co. at San Pedro CA this vessel was commissioned in 1944 and based at Seattle WA. This vessel was a US Coast Guard icebreaker which, in 1969, made an East to West transit of the Northwest Passage and again late in the season a West to East Transit, accompanying the Manhattan (the First Vessel to Transit Twice in One Season). This vessel was the first vessel to transit the length of M'Clure Strait. The northwind was built by Western Pipe & Steel Company of Los Angeles CA and launched in 1945. This vessel was decommissioned in 1978 the last built in the series of four Wind-Class heavy duty ocean icebreakers. This vessel was broken up. |
