On 14/04/1944 a fire broke out while this vessel was in Bomaby harbour. Several explosions sank 27 nearby vessels and damaged all the harbour structures. The gold bars this vessel was carrying and scrap iron were propelled up to a mile away. It took 7,000 soldiers a week to extinguish the fire. 1376 persons were killed and 3,000 injured. |
