Anecdotes

Al Skene (Email to Nauticapedia 29/09/2023) stated "I believe the Pachena Prince was at Port Renfrew earlier than the Renfrew Prince. When our family moved into Beach Camp (the railroad shop and log dump for the logging railroad on the South Arm of the San Juan River and South side of San Juan Valley's Bear Creek Logging Camp in 1955, the Pachena Prince was the tug used to serve the tow boat needs of that operation at Port Renfrew. After the Renfrew Prince was moved to another Divison and the logging railroad on the south side the San Juan Valley was shut down in 1958. The Pachena Prince was used for all tow boat chores at BCFP's Renfrew Div. log dumps until it was replaced by the tow boat "Foremast"." In 1992 this vessel sank at Bella Coola BC. This vessel was hauled out at Clayton Falls BC at a dry sort on the beach where this vessel fell over and was wrecked. Dave Johnson (Email to Nauticapedia 25/10/25) stated "As a former owner and Master of this vessel. I purchased this vessel in February 1980 not 1983 from Heatly boom services. It was powered by a 320hp Supercharged Cummins at this time. He engine, the marine gear was a twin disk 3:1 reduction and she swung a 50” by 10” pitch 3 blade bronze wheel. She drew a touch over 7’ and the bilge was filled with concrete. Probably from Chuck smith the previous owner. She threw a connecting rod in 1982, I pulled the engine and gear. Was rebuilding the engine in a fish plant on the Bella Coola wharf when the wharf burnt down. I found a pair of cummins and gears in Victoria out of a BC ferry. It was probably repowered and steel clad in the late 1960’s. I purchased this vessel in February 1980 not 1983 from Heatly boom services. It was powered by a 320hp Supercharged Cummins at this time."
