Anecdotes |

In the 1930s this vessel was captured by the US Coast Guard. This vessel was reputed to have been this vessel was owned by Al Capone, Chicago IL but there is no reliable evidence of this. However Captain Charles Hudson was definitely involved in the rum running business. This vessel was seized in December 1932 and released in early 1933. In 1949 this vessel was in service as a diesel engine demonstration vessel. In 1950 this vessel was in Queen Charlotte Islands Service. Rick James (Email to Nauticapedia 16/12/2016) states that "this vessel was powered by two 400 horsepower Liberty engines and a 75 horsepower diesel for engine as an auxiliary just for idling along or cruising. Salt Mist passed into American hands when Mr. John Waterman (owner: 1988 to 1993) sold her to Fred Jacobsen, Whitbey Island. Unfortunately, Fred Jacobsen died in a tragic accident a few years later and the family consequently sold the yacht off. John Waterman heard later that Salt Mist’s new owner renamed her Absolute and was keeping her moored in Lake Union." Rick James (Email to Nauticapedia 02/07/2017) reports that "Interestingly, her last Canadian owner, John Waterman, is a realtor that lives over in Comox. I did speak with him on the phone awhile back and during our conversation he said "yeah, word has it this vessel was owned by Al Capone! back then." Well, I informed him I have a standing offer to anyone who brings up his name as being involved out here in B.C. during Prohibition: … a fresh, orange $50 bill to you if you can come up with documentation to prove that claim!" Her Canadian Registry was closed September 17, 1993. |
