In 1965 this vesseloperated as a ferry from Langdale BC carrying school children. The School Board paid $21 per day as a subsidy of the extra run to carry the children. They ferry called at Gambier Bay, New Brighton, and Long Bay on Gambier Island. Captain Robert Bennie states that "In 1957 George commissioned Ed Monk the Seattle based Naval architect to design a new boat, the Sea Wolf V which was built in Vancouver. It was wooden hulled and carried 12 passengers. BC Ferries predecessor the BC Toll Authority Ferry System took over the service to Gambier and Keats Island in March of 1964, bought the Sea Wolf V and George retired from the water taxi and ferry business. Whether before BC Ferries took it over or after, it was fitted with styrofoam blocks to make it unsinkable - a desirable feature since Howe Sound in those days was full of booming grounds and dead heads. In fact, on June 8, 1966 this vessel struck a deadhead while picking up school children in Long Bay and Lorne Blaine, the operator had to beach her before this vesselfilled with water. The boat operated with a single Launch Operator and both Lorne Blaine and Hugo Hjorthy worked as operators on her. " |
