Anecdotes
In 1979 under the comand of Captain A. Piercey, the CCGS Sir John Franklin made a partial transit, west to east, of the Northwest Passage on her maiden voyage through the Beaufort Sea, Prince of Wales Strait and Viscount Melville Sound. In 1989 this vessel made a partial transit of the Northwest Passage under the command of Captain P. Chafe and Captain D. McGarvie, accompanied by the USCGC Polar Star, through Lancaster Sound, Vctoria Strait, Demarcation Point. In 1991 this vessel completed a partial transit of the Northwest Passage westward through Prince Regent Inlet, Bellot Strait to Tuktoyaktuk and return via Peel Sound under the command of Captain P. Chafe. This vessel was built of all welded steel construction. This vessel carries a crew of 75 and is based at St. John's Newfoundland. This vessel was christened by Mrs. Edward Shreyer, wife of the Governor General of Canada. In 1979 this vessel made a West to East Transit of the Northwest Passage on her maiden voyage from the West coast of Canada to her base on the East coast.
