MacBride) is at the helm and the people in the cockpit are me (on left), my mother (May MacBride) and a very dear friend of mine who was a regular boating companion for several years - we began our friendship in the spring of 1963 and I think the photo was taken about then.
Charon was a Chris-Craft, 30 feet long, and my family bought her in in late 1961 or early 1962 (I have some of my family's old log books and by the spring of 1962, Charon if referenced rather than our earlier boat).
When we first got the boat, we didn't really like its name (Lenasa), so our family set about trying to come up with a new one. "Charon" was the winner, suggested by my (now deceased) brother Ross, after the ancient Greek mythological character - however, he mispronounced it, saying the "Ch" like "Sh" rather than the Greek hard "K" sound. We didn't realize the error, so the boat became Charon (pronounced "sha-RON", with the stress on second syllable). We cruised regularly in the Gulf Islands, San Juans and up to Desolation Sound. My father also participated in predicted log races with the boat, with both the Capital City Yacht Club and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, and won a number of trophies. My parents sold Charon in about 1964 - our old log book shows that we were cruising in the next boat (Senator II) by the summer of 1965. " |
