Reed, Archibald Heurtley

Biography

In 1888 he apprenticed in the Invercargill.

He served in the Langstone as Second Officer in 1895.

He joined the Canadian-Australian Line and served in the Warrimoo.

He joined CP Steamships in 1902. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He was Relief Master in the Empress of China.

He was the Master of the Tartar in 1907. As an apprentice he sailed in the wool trade between New Zealand and the UK.

He served as Port Warden and Harbour Master in Vancouver over a 34 year period starting in 1911.

He was a BC Coast Pilot.

He was the BC Provincial Commissioner of the Sea Scouts.

Military Service

He joined the RNR 1899.

He was appointed as a Lieutenant RNR.

He served in H.M.S. Terrible and H.M.S. Argonaut in the Boxer Rebellion in China. (Mobilized for World War One service.) He commanded HMS a Q-Ship (HMS Underwing) in World War One.

He was appointed as a Commander RNR (Retired), (Transferred to RCNR), (Mobilized for World War Two service).

He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander (Temp.) RCNR (With seniority dated 13/03/1910).

He was appointed as a A/Commander RCNR (WHA).

He served as Naval Officer-in-Charge Prince Rupert 1939-44. (He was demobilized in 1944.) He was appointed as a Commander RCN(R) (With seniority dated 01/01/1942 on the retired list).

Anecdotes

On 17/10/1907 he sailed as Master in the Tartar outbound from Vancouver Harbour to Yokohama Japan in heavy fog and collided with the Charmer.
