Bowen Island Passenger Ferries The Sannie Transportation Company 1921–1956

by Peter D. Ommundsen 1997

In 1997 author and nautical historian Peter D. Ommundsen wrote a thorough summary of the ferries that serviced Bowen Island from the mainland for almost 40 years. The book is still in print and captures a detailed picture of the challenges of commuting between the island and the mainland. Located in Howe Sound, Bowen Island is now one of the communities that comprises MetroVancouver. But a hundred years ago it was a remorte location, difficult to access unless you owned a vessel to take you there.

The book is professionally footnoted, and contains a detailed list of all the vessels that were engaged in the service over that period. It is a good read and very informative capturing both the facts of the history as well as the flavour of stories being play out.

The book is still available directly from Indigo.

The mariner and naval biography database has also been updated and now contains 58,599 entries (with 3996 images).

Thanks to Ray Warren who is beginning a long process of filling gaps in the photo record of vessel histories in the database. Ray has been documenting the ships of Vancouver Harbour for more than 60 years.

Thanks to contributor Mike Rydqvist McCammon for the hundreds of photos he has contributed to illustrate British Columbia’s floating heritage.

My very special thanks to our volunteer IT adviser, John Eyre, who (since 2021) has modernized, simplified and improved the update process for the databases into semi–automated processes. His participation has been vital to keeping the Nauticapedia available to our netizens.
